   Beaches - South

South Maui is where you’ll find the widest variety of beaches.  Ma’alaea is also called Sugar Beach and it’ s an excellent beach for walking.  This four-mile stretch of white sand beach connects Ma’alaea Harbor to Kihei.

Soft sand gives Sugar Beach its name, is fine enough for walking barefoot.  Early morning walks are probably best before the trade winds pick up.

Next comes Kamaole Beach in Kihei.  It’s divided into three beach parts.  Calm wind and water conditions, make Kamaole Beach parks, kid friendly.  There are also spectacular views of the neighboring islands.

Moving along south we have Keawakapu Beach, which is said to be the islands most romantic beach.  Couples come here to stroll hand in hand down this long stretch of golden sand or come to catch an enchanting sunset.  Our word of advice, don’t trespass on private properties that line the beach.

Continuing down south is Wailea beach.  From sunrise to sunset, plenty to see and do.  If you’re an early riser, this is an ideal beach for yoga or meditation.  Take a walk or jog in the tropical morning air.  As noon draws near, the excitement begins.  Rent a Hobie Cat and go sailing across the tranquil waters.  Try kayaking or test your skills at windsurfing.  Explore another world by scuba diving or snorkeling at Wailea Beach.  There’s an abundance of tropical fish, beautiful coral reef and exotic marine life.

Now on south to Makena.  You’ll find Big Beach, which is exactly like its name says.  Big.  It is fantastically beautiful and often times almost empty.  It’s quite a jaunt from anything and everything.  So make sure you pack your beach bag according.  Big beach is a beach where the current gets very strong.  So heed all warning signs.

Just over the hill from Big Beach lies a smaller more intimate beach called Little Beach.  In the past this beach has been promoted as a nude beach, and if you’re the daring type, be forewarned it is against the law to bathe in the buff here and local authorities frown on this and of course will issue citations.

Remember when discovering a new beach always use caution.  Safety 1st is the best possible beach experience.
