Maui’s east side beaches may be a bit out of the way, but well worth the drive. Located right off the Hana Hwy is Wainapanapa Beach and Wainapanapa State Park. This is a stunning black sand beach, sculpted rocks, wild twisted foliage, lava caves and tubes. There’s even a blowhole in the lava near the shoreline.
The snorkeling and diving can be excellent here but it’s very seldom calm. Swimming is possible but the water and current can be very rough. With no outside reef to break the force of the wave.
Just a little outside of Hana is one of the most pristine beaches on the island, called Hamoa Beach. It’s high cliffs and jewel like setting evoke the quintessential tropical paradise. Hamoa has a beautiful mixture of black and white sand and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Its exquisite emerald green waters are protected on both side of the beach and make for a haven of tranquility, ideal for relaxing all day long.
Remember when discovering a new beach, always use caution and safety first for the best possible beach experience.
